Hey, Pangeans!

Frank A. Clarke once said: “If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”

Success is a constant process of overcoming obstacles, and the result of determination and perseverance. Although we are finding some more COVID bumps on the road, we will get awesome jackets in your mailbox as soon as we can!

Manufacturing Update

Since the beginning of March, Chinese factories have been disrupted by nationwide COVID-related restrictions as daily infectious numbers surge in 28 provinces. Last week, we received the terrible news that the factory we were going to work with had to temporarily close its doors until China’s zero-COVID policy takes a bright turn.

What´s the solution?

Here at PANGEA, nothing can stop us from accomplishing our goals and delivering our promises to our beloved backers! A couple of months ago, we anticipated that something bad could happen with our factory and we reached out to some alternative factories. The good news is that we have just received a brand new prototype from another manufacturer and they are actually amazing, and better than the previous one!

We sent them a list of final adjustments and they will finalize the final samples in the coming weeks before going into production.

In the last update, we estimated the jackets to be ready by June. Due to this delay, the estimated delivery time is not going to be too far off! We are expecting the second (hopefully, final!) sample in 3 to 4 weeks with shipping included, the jacket production will take approximately 7 weeks and an additional 1 week for quality control, so we’re doing our best to start delivering your jackets by July.

Cleaning up Italy in April

Have you had any plans to start your spring cleaning our planet? If you’re going to be in Italy in April, be sure not to miss out on this cleanup event! Our wonderful volunteer, Rosanna, is hosting a PANGEA cleanup in Bari, southern Italy this month. We will send you more information closer to the event.

March Impact Report

By March 31st, the PANGEA River Heroes have collected 8,800 lbs (4,000 kg) more of trash in Padang’s rivers in Indonesia thanks to your purchases.

The photos below were taken by one of the river heroes, Ali, on March 16th. That day he collected 82 kg (180 lbs) of trash from this river alone!

We are committed to the goal of “For every $10 we raised, we’ll collect 4 lbs of trash”. As we raised $119,233.41 on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, we are going to collect 47,692 lbs (21,632 kilograms) of trash from the planet. And, since the campaign ended on December 15th, we have prevented 42,159 lbs (19,123 kg) of trash from entering our oceans with our barriers and collected 346 lbs (157 kg) from the beach. We will continue collecting trash in the coming weeks until we reach 5,187 lbs (2,353 kg) and go beyond!

Hi, Pangeans!

We’re one month closer to getting your jackets to your doorsteps and have caught one more month of river trash with our barriers.

Catchin’ trash

Since our last update four weeks ago, your funds enabled us to collect 9,000 pounds (4,000 kilograms) more trash from our river barriers in Padang, Indonesia! Check out these photos of our river heroes keeping the trash from entering our oceans.

 Check our live dashboard here.

Preppin' Pulls

Our recycled zipper pulls are ready to make their appearance on your jackets!

First, our Balinese partners, Yayasan Kaki Kita Sukasada (YKKS), washed, grinded, and melted the plastic we collected from our barriers into plastic sheets. YKKS is a foundation in North Bali with a mission to empower people with disabilities, in part, by making prosthetic legs from recycled plastic.

Then, the plastic sheets were passed on to the Bali Design Center, a studio that specializes in sustainable design practices, who cut those sheets into your zipper pulls.

Watch this 1-minute video to see the full process of the zipper pulls that you will soon have in your hands!! From barrier trash to treasures.

Eco Jacket Production Progress

The next round of samples is finally done. We experienced 2 months of delays due to the Omicron outbreak lockdowns, the Chinese New Year, and some recent power outages in China.

Despite these hiccups, the samples are now headed our way! Once they arrive next week we will check that everything is ready and start the production.

With these delays, we are estimating that the jackets will be ready by June instead of April. We are sorry for these delays, and rest assured that we’re moving as fast as the world will allow getting your Eco Jackets in the mail!

Backerkit Survey for Style & Sizing

When our campaign ended, you hopefully got an email from Backerkit inviting you to complete a survey. It’s quick (we promise!) and necessary so that your jacket comes to you in the preferred size, color, and style. Be sure to fill out the form and double-check your address! And, send us a message here if you pledged but haven’t heard from Backerkit yet.

Thanks a million, as always, for your support, and for bringing us closer to co-creating the most impactful brand in the world! We are doing it together.

With Love,

The PANGEA Team

Hi Pangeans!

Another happy day here at Pangea getting your jackets ready for shipment. Here are some updates to keep you up to speed with the progress.

We'll start with the not-so-good news:

  • Chinese New Year fell between January 31st and February 6th, welcoming the start of a beautiful spring. The public holiday has left our Chinese suppliers feeling warm-hearted and refreshed, but also created a small delay in our timeline to get the final samples before production. We will keep you updated.
  • Additional Omicron outbreaks are popping up across China and strict lockdowns are being enforced. Factories are closing their doors at the sharpest rate they have in 23 months. As such, production slow-downs are expected. We'll let you know about changes to your Eco Jacket shipment date as we get a confirmation from the factory.

That's all for the delays and slow-downs- now on to the good news!

  • Your Eco Jacket's recycled zipper pulls are in the works! The plastic used to create these zipper pulls was collected by our river barriers in Sumatra, sorted, packed, and shipped to us in Bali

Last week we sent the trash to the eco-factory we are working with here to recycle the plastic.

They will now convert our river plastic into sheets. Then, Bali Design Center will laser cut the sheets into your treasured little zipper pulls! Keep your eyes peeled for pictures of the pulls to come in the next update!

  • The Eco Jacket's microplastic-catching laundry bags are finished and ready to ship! We're so excited about these. Since the Eco Jacket is made of 56 recycled plastic bottles, it is prone to releasing a small number of microplastics when it goes through the wash (just like all of your other synthetic fabrics). With this simple laundry bag, you have the opportunity to collect the microplastics from your washing machine before they enter wastewater and make their way into the environment. Small bag, big impact.

Thanks for reading, Pangeans, and thanks for your continued support! We can't wait to get this jacket out to you!

Love,

The PANGEA Team

Hey Pangeans,

Happy New Year!

We've got a wave of exciting news for you, so without further ado, we'd love to share our:

Eco Jacket Updates

  • Your new jacket carabiners are in our excited little hands! They're all set to clip and go.
  • The jacket tags are finished too! ("Who cares?", you might ask?) Well, these tags are biodegradable and filled with seeds! Snip the tag off your jacket, nestle it in some soil, drizzle with water, and wait. In a few weeks, you'll have the beautiful seedling of a Rudbeckia plant :D
  • Your microplastic-capturing laundry bags are in production. Their debut into the world was momentarily delayed due to Covid slowdowns, but rest assured they will soon be ready to be center stage!
  • As jacket accessories keep rolling in, the Eco Jacket itself is also in its final prototype phase, including your input on the logo placement and design and some final adjustments! The factories are now in the Chinese New Year break, and they will send it after they go back to work. We're so excited to share it with you!

In addition to a bunch of progress on the Eco Jacket, we also have some...

Eco Movement Updates

We are doing our best to make 2022 a great year for the planet. Here's how we're progressing so far:

Stretch Goals

During the Eco Jacket campaign, this community managed to achieve TWO of our Eco Stretch Goals!

We are currently in the planning stage and will start execution in February and March.

Our Commitment

We also promised that for every 10 campaign dollars raised we would offset 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms) of CO2 and collect 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms) of trash. The math is done and we now know thanks to these jackets we will capture over 40,000 pounds (18,000 kilograms) of CO2 from the atmosphere and over 40,000 pounds (18,000 kilograms) of trash removed from land and sea!

Since the campaign has ended, our river trash barriers heroes have already collected 13,000 pounds (6,000 kilograms) of trash- 33% of the goal we set out to achieve! In another month or two we intend to have collected the remaining 27,000 pounds (12,000 kilograms) of waste.

To achieve our CO2 removal goal, we are collaborating with myclimate.org which will facilitate planting trees for us early next month. Cleaner skies, here we come!

PANGEA's First Cleanup of 2022

On the 2nd of January, we held a successful community clean-up in Bali. We are proud to tell you that with the participation of 46 volunteers and a troupe of excellent collaborators, we managed to collect 346 pounds (157 kilograms) of trash off the beach! Click here to see our event video.

River Barrier Dashboard

Lastly, we've built a new river barrier dashboard! See for yourself, real-time, how much trash the Pangea barriers are collecting every day! Click here to check it out.

That's all for now, Pangeans! We hope your year is off to a sweet, green start. As always, thank you for your support!

Lots of love,

The PANGEA Team
